DTF vs. UV DTF Transfers: What's the Difference?

Two Technologies, Two Very Different Use Cases

DTF and UV DTF are both transfer printing methods — but they use different processes, apply to different surfaces, and produce different results. Choosing the wrong one for your project can mean wasted time and materials. Here's everything you need to know to order correctly.

How DTF (Direct-to-Film) Transfers Work

DTF transfers are printed onto a special PET film using water-based inks, then coated with a hot-melt adhesive powder that is cured with heat. The result is a flexible, soft-hand transfer designed specifically for fabric and apparel.

To apply, you use a heat press to bond the transfer to the garment. The adhesive melts into the fabric fibers, creating a durable, wash-resistant print.

How UV DTF Transfers Work

UV DTF transfers are printed using UV-curable inks onto a specialized film. Instead of heat activation, the transfer uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive — meaning you simply peel and stick. No heat press required.

UV DTF is designed for hard, rigid surfaces like tumblers, mugs, phone cases, wood, acrylic, and more. It produces a glossy, vibrant finish that sits on top of the surface rather than bonding into it.

Which Should You Order from The Transfer Barn?

Decorating apparel? Go with DTF transfers. Build your gang sheet, upload your designs, and get press-ready transfers shipped to your door.

Decorating tumblers, mugs, or hard goods? Go with UV DTF. No heat press needed — just peel and apply.

Still Not Sure?

If you're decorating both fabric and hard goods, you may need both. Many of our customers order DTF transfers for their apparel line and UV DTF transfers for their drinkware and gift items. Both can be gang-sheeted to keep costs low.
